Baseball was first played in Melbourne in 1857 but took off when Albert
Spalding brought two teams to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide in 1888. After
this, Australian baseball became closely associated with cricketers who played
baseball in the winter to keep fit for summer cricket. By 1970, Most Australian
baseball clubs switched their competitions to summer and many cricketers left
the game because they could not play both sports.
Still, Australian baseball has grown steadily apart from cricket. Development
of junior leagues saw excellent development of players who attracted attention
of international scouts, resulting in the signing of hundreds of Australians,
many who are playing in professional leagues in the US, Latin America, Japan,
Korea and Taiwan.
